Yellow jade is a trade name for serpentine, not jade. Like lemon jade, the name sits on serpentine in the market — roughly 2.5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than true jade, and waxy in character. It is a real stone that wears well as beads and the trade name travels with the strand; it is simply not jade. True jade means only jadeite or nephrite. Strands whose titles say dyed belong to our dyed jade line, which starts as genuine white jade, and are listed there instead.
